Cool People:
*I have met so many awesome people this year and so many people have helped out our band in so many ways but here are a few who stand out this year. I am sure I will forget someone so forgive me if I do.*
Chris Ayris in Mount Pleasant MI. Most stand-up dude I know, who has the best taste in music! (plus he took care of my favorite coat for 10 long months.)
Bob Hershberger in Orlando Florida. Great musician and all around good guy. (Gave me a brand new guitar because he was tired of watching me play shitty ones!)
Matt Woods (and Gina) (who let me back in their home even after the drunken fiasco I delivered there over the summer.)
Dave Zero who continuously goes far and beyond the call of duty (hotel czar and airplane travel aficionado).
Buzzbin Mike in Canton for the support and the t-shirts. Plus he delivers the only music magazine in Canton. Nuff Said.
Sammy, Dalin, Jeff and Jerry for enduring stinky and at times unbearably long drives in the van, just to pull up somewhere, get drunk and play our songs for 45 minutes. Intestinal fortitude and stubborn pig-headedness will leave you broke but happy.
Joy. The best girl ever. Puts up with all of this music nonsense.

The Casket Seat

As I exited the stage of The Cretin Hop in a mess of rolling, disconnected drums, broken guitar strings and squealing feedback I saw to my surprise and horror the familiar curly ebony hair, clammy salmon skin and gaudy, carrot-orange t-shirt of our biggest fan, “Crazy Matt”. He was stumbling around a motley cluster of leather clad punk rockers near a dilapidated pool table. Through a delighted snaggletooth shark-grin he announced he had flown from Ohio to join us for the evening.
My band was on what had quickly become known as “The Nightmare Tour”. We traversed the mid-west, crossed the Rocky Mountains, meandering our way sleep deprived and starving to Spokane. To my disappointment we ended up playing last and the bartender had seemed to be pouring free beer down my throat in gluttonous amounts. Intoxicated, we had crashed and bashed our way through our set for the requisite 45 minutes.
From the scowls on their faces I gathered that Matt was obviously bothering the locals and I decided to rush in for a rescue mission. I put my arm around Matt in my best “drunken buddy” way and asked him if he wanted to head to the bar for another round.
“We have conquered Spokane again!” I said to him as we cheered and guzzled our shots of Jameson like vikings.
Five rounds of miscellaneous shots later and Matt seemed to be careening in and out of consciousness, spewing forth nonsense and gibberish like he was preaching to a congregation of drunks and losers. A rare moment of common sense bubbled from my foggy brain and I grabbed Matt by his shirt and pulled him to me. I stared into his eyes until I saw a spark of comprehension looking back at me. He swayed from side to side, his perspiration soaked shirt pulled tight in the grasp of my right fist.
“MATT!!!! WHERE ARE YOU SLEEPING TONIGHT?” I yelled above the thundering guitars of Black Flag’s “My War” ripping through the jukebox.
“Ahm goin’ with youu guysss.” He managed to hiss out between his teeth, his pupils dilating and staring far beyond my face.
“Oh God.” I spurted out in a mumble as Matt wrenched himself from my grasp, spun to his left and was gone…lost in the crowd of leopard print jackets, brilliant magenta mohawks and seasoned, worn out combat boots.
I promptly left my post at the bar and began to search for my band-mates. I had to find them and clue them in on our soon to be newest stow-away in the van. I rounded everyone up and through the chaos and noise told them of our dilemma. All of us had dealt with the insanity of sloshed “Crazy Matt” many times before and none of us were looking forward to having to do it again tonight.
“Dude, where the hell’s he going to sit?” Sammy ascertained to me, his fatigued bloodshot eyes conveying a sense of horror and impending doom that we all were feeling.
“He’s going to have to take the casket.” Our drummer, Ben smiled deviously at us through emaciated cheekbones, grinning like an undertaker in the shadows and flashes of disco lights.
“Yeah man, let’s put him in the coffin!” Sammy then giggled and shouted with drunken glee. His bald head glistened.
Our van was a full size Ford Econoline that we had taken one of the bench seats out of to make room for band equipment and merchandise to sell. It was completely packed and left very little room for comfortable sitting, let alone a place to sleep. So at one point during the tour I had decided to see what it would be like to lay on the floor with my legs stretched out underneath the remaining bench seat and my head between the driver and front passenger seat. Lying prostrate on the floor with my head crushed against the engine block and my legs wedged in to the metal bottom of the bench seat, I found it to be excruciating and extremely claustrophobic. Everyone took turns trying it out and we all laughed and said it was like being in a funeral casket because if we were to wreck you would be trapped and certainly be crushed and mangled in a most hideous way.
After we loaded our equipment into the van and were ready to leave I went back into The Cretin Hop and found Matt slumped over the bar. I shook him and told him it was time to leave and I helped him to his feet. He staggered with my arm around him and I guided him through the door and into the night. The side van door was wide open, the maw of a hungry dragon. It seemed to be smiling in the moonlight and the Casket Seat awaited Crazy Matt within.

Ben writes his thoughts on the Spring 2009 Tour

"We do this all because we have to not because we know why...Nosferatu?"
Its good to be back home.I missed all of my friends so much. The tour was one of the most amazing surreal experiences of my life but honestly one of the best. Ive waited my whole life to do that and it was everything I couldve imagined and most what I couldnt. Thanks to Chris,Sammy,Brad and Ricky for having me on board. It was an honor and a pleasure.Darling Czar is not done as practice commences on Thursday. I do believe that there will be some great new music and some unexpected twists coming from both camps. AWESOME. This really sealed the deal tho...I always knew I was down for music but I am IN. I am pretty much going to do nothing but write, play, get better on guitar and GO. I truelly believe that I was born to do this.So lets wrap a couple chords around it and let it come out. The future is looking great and I am looking forward to it.I got to play music across the USA and come home to a warm welcome to my loved ones. Banner life.
Things I learned on the road...
The Hooligan produces smellsI never thought possible..
Vans slip ons are not good in the snow.
I didnt think I could take more vitamins or "be" healthier but obviously I can.
Vegas really is for high rollers and oxygen bars are actually really rad.And they take stealing bananas from the buffet very seriously.
130 some hours in a van is a long ass fucking time.Good thing we all smelled so good.
South Dakota,Wall-Drug,Rockabilly and Pyschos, sinusitis, elevations, sleeping in the "casket",waking up in a blizzard,Deer from Montana, and losing your drum key every 15 minutes sucks.Hard.
Crazy Matt is crazy no matter what state he is in.Happy Easter Bunny Rabbit Cowboy.
Being poor and eating healthy gas station and fast food does not exist.
If you are an aging guitarist and you look like Yosemite Sam do not call out other bands and be arrogant, as you are already a self parody and a joke that doesnt need told.Your existence is funny enough.
Brad has never tuned his bass.I thought they were kidding.
Dean the sound guy at The Filling Station is the best sound guy ever and made my kit sound like I was Shouting at the Devil. As did Middletucky.Much respect.
Slim Pickens kicks ass!! The MIGHTY Slim Pickens scares me.
The lunchlady in our GPS smokes Mistys, drinks Bourbon and hates us.
Junkies in Seattle did not ruin that amazing city but tried and know how to pick a lock. Mother Fuckers.
Playing orignal music to a packed house or nobody is a reason to live and always the best thing ever.
"She was a damn good dancer but she wasnt all that great of a girlfriend..."
I apologize to anyone who I may have ignored, let down, not been there for,or brought stress on in some way by means of learning a very hard lesson. Maybe the hardest Ive yet to learn. I love my friends. They are my family to me. They are everything to me.Thats what makes my world go around. I normally have pretty good radar.Ive finally faced my own demon.Im the first one to say in advice to not pay rent to a slumlord. I guess I had to stop MYSELF. I believe in people, good and the fact that everyone has something to offer. But enough is enough.some people get IT,some people dont. Id like to think Im a pretty good person.I try my best to love and do what I can and make the best decisions I can. I believe when shit gets bad learn from the lessons you got served and go on wiser and for the first time ever maybe I let down my defenses for many reasons and learned the hard way Im better then whats been given to me. Ive got tons of people in my life who I love and know how to love me back...Beach and Brewster RockCity Punks,My family forever Jordo,Kim,Rob,Michelle,Justin and Mary,My Canton familia from Dennys to Friendlys, the best roomate ever Stephy and the people that came with her,My musical brotherhood,Jeff,JC,Chuck,Sammy,Billy,Joey,The Losers and Old Glory camp,a friend Id thought Id lost who is happier now then Ive ever seen her and got me banana twins to welcome me home,Ms.Miller, my sister and best friend who Id be fucked without, from 42nd St. to Tennessee,California,Ravenna,Jersey,Iraq,Minerva and back again.Talk is cheap and it doesnt mean much. AINT NOBODY GOT A BLESSING LIKE MINE. My everyday proof is my life and I in a way have forgotten that and let somethings consume me.Fuck that and FUCK the negative. To those who are thankful for me I could never put into words how much your friendship means to me. Ohio sucks but Ive got the finest on my team. I love you all and cant wait to see you. Were in this together.I said all this because it was in my heart to say it. Cheers on it.
"No sleep til April!!!!!!"
Please if you havent signed up yet online you CANT WALK!!! I am super stoked about the MS walk. Its turning something shitty into a positive which Ive never been good at but think I am learning to do better everyday.Summer is soon and I cant wait!!.Road trips, shows, sunny weather, late night outside smoking conversations!!! FUCK yes!!!
The future is exciting and I cant wait for tomorow. Come what may I am amped.I missed Gaslight and Morrissey...eh.... but...I have been writing alot lately and hope that very soon I''ll be singing my heart out again. Cheers everyone.
"Dont spend your life paying rent to a slumlord."
Later on!!!!!!

So much happens....

Well once again it has been forever since I posted on here... we have been playing our asses off over late winter and spring and now we are heading into summer! The Curse of the Valentine tour in February was a big success and more fun than should be legal! It was to support the release of our first 7 inch on Midwest Superfriends Records and man it was crazy!!! We played in Chicago on WLUW Radio RAZOR AND DI SHOW, played a completely insane drunken show in Mt Pleasant Mi with FULL FRONTAL LOODITY and ROBOTS ON CRAC ( I got cracked ribs at that one!), then back to Chicago for a packed house at The Mutiny in support of the amazing REGRETS!
We have been hitting our hometown hard and have made a bunch of great friends that we didn't know beforee... some other great bands we have played with... the always wonderful COWBOY MESSIAH, DARLING CZAR, 52 DECIBELS, THE DEVIANTS, CATALYST, RDA, MORS ONTOLOGICA, Tim Pak's new band THE BUDGET SINNERS, BIXY LUTZ, PIPELINE, THE EMERALD LIZARDS etc.
We also recorded a cover song by the classic punk/blues band THE GUN CLUB!!! The song we did was SEX BEAT and it will be released on a tribute album on Ghost On The Highway Records later this year (I think Halloween :)). Tommy from COWBOY MESSIAH graciously stepped in to play drums on it for us.
We played a show in Blacksburg Virginia with the awesome 52 DECIBELS that was so sparsely attended that the dicks at the bar shut u down before midnight. We made up for it by going completely insane at our hotel rooms all weekend. Brad didnt sleep at all and got a rather fitting tattoo with our super roadies Dalin and Sammy.
This July is going to be lots of fun too! July 4th we are playing in downtown Canton with our great friends COWBOY MESSIAH. Then July 18th we are recording a live album at Sadie Renes in Canton to hopefully be released in late fall. Also playing that night will be two amazing bands that we adore, MATT WOODS PLAN A BAND from Knoxville Tennessee and the awesome TWO COW GARAGE from Columbus!!! This should make for one helluva n evening!!!
Then July 24th we are hitting Columbus, July 25th record store appearance in Louisville Kentucky in the day and then playing at MAG BAR in Louisville that night!!! Then the next day July 26th, we are playing Manhattans in Knoxville Tennessee with MATT WOODS PLAN A!!! Whew!! Should be an awesome trip!!!
Well I think that catches us up for now.... hope to ee you at some shows!!!

November Adventures

Where to begin? We kicked off November with a cool show at the Village Inn in Canton opening for PIPELINE. Brad got into a fight outside of the bar and the P.A. system was kinda bad but it was a fun show none-the-less. The PIPELINE guys are old friends of Joe’s and treated us great!!! Next we traveled to Altavista Virginia at Lucky’s Irish Pub for the first time to play with 52 DECIBELS and man, those are some really fun people! The guys in 52 DB’s, J.P. and Zeb are two downright awesome fellas! We had a GREAT show and JP played a couple songs with us even. Virginia is a gorgeous state in the Fall with so many beautifully colored trees and leaves it was almost driving through a painting. We had wonderful journey. Thanks to JP, Zeb and their families for the awesome treatment and for all the fine food and awesome partying! Ya’all rawk in our hearts! Next was a great show at Sadie Rene’s the night before Thanksgiving where we drank like kings and were pleased to open for a great, great punk band called THE DEVIANTS (they even played an OPERATION IVY song for me) and our new metal friends in CATALYST. The day after Thanksgiving we were off to the great white Northj to Mount Pleasant Michigan to play with our good friends FULL FRONTAL LOODITY (who I might add have one of the best robot love songs I have ever heard). We had a late start and then ran into some rough traffic which made us even later but we finally rolled into the frigid town of Mt Pleasant around 11pm and quickly loaded in and set up at RUBBLES BAR. We quickly discovered that we had left Joe’s bass drum pedal and his sticks behind which really bummed things. It was not our greatest performance but we sliced our way through about 6 songs and then we turned on the rock full force, played 6 more and ended the set with Joe’s drums layin’ around the stage. Thanks to the FFL guys for letting us borrow some equipment and thanks to our new good friend Chris for giving us a place to stay, many beers and saki to drink and some darn fine music to listen to. People in Mt Pleasant are awesome. We spent the following night with Chris and his friend Jessica at Frankies in Toledo watching yet another awesome TWO COW GARAGE show. The new drummer for those guys is amazing and we wish them the best of luck in Europe . In all… a very eventful two weeks that we can’t wait to do again!!

Man, we have been playin' some really fun shows lately!!! Our new drummer Joe Waller has reinvigorated the spirit of The LOSERS and now it feels like we can't be stopped! We will be playing alot of shows over the next few months so we hope to see ya'll out there at them, having fun and pounding beers and many shots! We just played an awesome show at Ruby Tuesday in Columbus with labelmates ROBOTS ON CRACK. The show was so much fun and we were treated GREAT by the bar and the ROBOTS! The highlight of the evening was the drunk asshole that got all pissed off at A.J. from ROBOTS about some silly/funny comment he made about Dimebag Darrell... the dude was irate and it was truly hilarious. As usual there was alot of Twinkie tossing going on whic=h made for lotsa fun...not to mention the after party when the bar was just giving us free beer and drinks!!!! WAY COOL!!! About a month before that we played at ANDREWS BAR in Ypsilanti, Mi with the ROBOTS and COWBOY MESSIAH and it was ssssooooo much fun!!! We love that place. We will be heading to the Woodshed in Feb/Mar to start recording our sophomore album with a tentative release date of June...maybe sooner..we'll see what happens. Thanks to all of you for yer continued support and for comin out to the shows and gettin down and dirty rowdy with us!!!! You all deserve awards!

YPSILANTI RAWK CITY

The show was at ANDREWS BAR in Ypsilanti, MI. The bands COWBOY MESSIAH and ROBOTS ON CRACK were sweetly borderline insane. The crowd was drunk and screaming the words. ANDREWS is one of our new favorite places to play. It was the debut of our new drummer Joe Waller. He was amazing and bashed the fuck out of his drums just like a true LOSER. If you were'nt there...well you shoulda been.... it was classic and not the least bit classy. Brad brawled with some dudes later that night... it was just like old times.

Alright... I am gonna hve to start writing in this thing more often! I can't believe the last time I did was April! The time has been flying by. Well we had a great CD release party in April for the "JUST KILLER" EP. It was a rough night for us because we had a fill-in drummer, Thank you Scott! Then we went to Detroit at the end of April and played a rawking set at the goth club, Mephistos in Detroit. Our good buddy Nick marko, who played drums on the EP, played with us. It was great because Nick is a powerful drummer and it made me and Brad play extra hard. It was yet another awesome weekend in Detroit and I have never seen Tommy from COWBOY MESSIAH as drunk as he was at our hotel room later that night!!! Plus Brad puked all over the bathroom! HA! HA! It was definitely a fun-filled weekend. Thanks to Nikki and COWBOY MESSIAH for taking us to the Tigers baseball game too!
The past few months have been busy for me but definitely slow-going for the band. We signed on with new Canton based record label, MIDWEST SUPERFRIENDS and have tried a bunch of drummers out but none have wanted to commit to our "rigorous" schedule. So we are basically still ina state of limbo, searching for the right person. Hopefully we will find someone soon and get back to rocking your asses off. If anyone knows a drummer who might be interested please let them know about us and contact us here via email or something. We have the bulk of our second album written and just need a drummer to come and blast us off!
On a different note, I recorded a solo album in the Spring with the help of Tim Pak and Brad. It was something that I needed to do. I was going through a pretty shitty time and all it seemed I could do was write sad songs. Originally I brought'em to Brad as LOSERS songs but we both decided we didn't want a buncha sad ass LOSERS songs so I decided to record a solo album. It turned out pretty good and the MIDWEST SUPERFRIENDS label is releasing it very soon. It will be available here on the site and a buncha other places. Aaron Geis designed some truly awesome artwork for it. It is definitely some cry in yer beer stuff so be forewarned.
We are getting geared up to play the MIDWEST SUPERFRIENDS RAWK SHOWCASE at Sadie Rene's in Canton on Fri Aug 3rd. It should be a stellar evening. Some of the best bands that I know of will be there. So I hope ya'll will come out. i think that's about all for now.

March Almost Killed Me

Hi everyone. Sorry I haven't posted anything on here for a long time. My personal life has been in a state of massive upheaval the last few months and following on some strange parallel cosmic path, so has the band's. Everything in my life that has felt so solid for the last 3 1/2 years of my life is gone and I have felt very lost and unsure of myself. The only thing that has been here for me is God and music, and I have been writing a ton of songs (mostly sad ones) and thankfully God has been there to keep me from falling into the bottle. Todd has officially left the band. After many months of trying to figure things out, that is what it finally has come down to. Todd is a talented drummer and we wish him the best. We are currently unsure of our status but we will be trying to figure things out soon. We will have some surrogate drummers at the LOOP show on April 14th and in Detroit at the end of the month. It will still be a rawkin' great time no matter what. Hope you'll all be there. As my Dad always says, "And this too shall pass."
Take Care,
Chris

A Return to Detroit (Jan 26th)

Well we went to Detroit last weekend for an awesome 2 night rawk out.

Highlights... people we don't know singing our songs at Trixie's Coffee House as we played.

The best quote of the weekend... (Andrew saying to J. from Cowboy Messiah), "The Losers say they have to play next. They are drinking at a second-band pace.":D

Best song... Cowboy Messiah playing "EVEREST". My new fav off their cd!

Best moment... Matt sitting in his underwear on the bed half passed out eating a buncha coneys and dripping them on his naked chest at 6 AM.

Amazing... learning the wild truth about the crazy and incredible life that J. from COWBOY MESSIAH has lived

This was an awesome weekend for the MIDWEST SUPERFRIENDS.

New Year's Eve

So it is New Year's Eve and I am sittin' here thinkin' about all kindsa stuff. I'm sittin' here in my little apartment all alone waiting on Brad to get here. We decided that even though we weren't playin' anywhere this year we were still gonna hang out and drink. I received the DVD version of "NIRVANA LIVE TONIGHT SOLD OUT" from my girlfriend, Darcey for Christmas (she's the best! I love her so much!) and I have it on and I forgot how much this shit really rocks. It is makin me have that damned itch to play though. I can't seem to watch a band anymore without wanting to play too. I started drinking about 2 hours ago so I'm feelin good...just beer though...I'm saving the JAGERMEISTER for later. I'm kinda depressed. We started last year off with a bang with an exciting New Years Eve show at Bernie's in Columbus. Got into a fight with one of the other bands and had a riotous evening. My friend's Rosik and Andrew were here all the way from DETROIT and that was so fun.We partied hard for days! We had a very successful year and really made some awesome friends along the way. One of the greatest things about being in a band is all of the cool friends that you make along the way. We traveled as much as we could this year, made multiple trips to Detroit and Chicago and Indianapolis for some ass kicking shows! I think we did good. We drank an incredible amount of booze and partied like we were in The REPLACEMENTS. Hell, in Indianapolis when we opened for THE REGRETS our bar tab was $600!!! We have been lucky to have a very loyal following in our hometown that caters to DJ's, cover bands and Metal bands. Thanks to everyone of you that has come out to see us play this year. Thanks to Misty for the mic stands and the misc equipment...you sincerely RAWK! Thanks to Crazy Matt Mayle for all of the shots and for that great night laying on the sidewalk at White Castle after we got arrested in Columbus. Thanks to Tim Pak for everything you have done for us. Thanks to our families and loved ones for puttin' up with our "crazy rock-n-roll dream". Thanks to all the badass cool motherfuckers in all of the bands we have played with this year... you guys all deserve the best. Thanks for letting us sleep on your floors and for feeding us and making sure we are always intoxicated! Thanks to Ray at the LOOP Cafe in Canton for letting us do what no one else in Canton would!! You are AWESOME! Thanks to Lori Ann for always helping us get some money and some good shows. Man, it is weird getting old. Another year is ancient history... I'd have to say...man, it FUCKING RAWKED! Everyone be safe and listen to one of our songs turned up to 10!!!!

thanks to all of the many, many friends, fans, and family that have supported us through a fabulous 2006. and even more so, thatnks for the overwelming concern you all you showed during our confusing year's end. it's that kind of support that fuels losers like us to keep trudging through crap and shit. we've been doing this for a long time and don't want to let you down now after all these years.
that is why chris and i scrambled to issue 5 new recordings for y'all. todd was greatly missed due to person obligations, but because of the chance that our shows in Detroit Jan. 19 & 20, may be last for a while, we wanted felt it our obligation to do this for you guys. our fans, friends, and families.

2007 starts a new year and new adventures, and MBL will be there with all of you. in one way or another.

Enjoy the new songs. they're dedicated to you all.

Good To See Some Old Friends

While I was back home for our Halloween shows I went to my old, old friend's TRICIA ATKINSON and BRIAN MOYER'S wedding reception. Tricia and Bryan looked damned REAL, dressed up as an amish couple! Man, it was more like a family reunion and I was real pissed that I had to leave early. It was so good to see all of my old friends from the BURGH!!! If any of ya are visiting my site here please email me and say hi! I would love to hang out with ya'll again sometime!! My old friend Jason Yeager and I had a great time talking about the old days and how lucky we are to be alive. At one time that dude could drink more whiskey than anyone I have ever met and he still could play the bass! And, Elvin and I laughed our asses about the time we went with some dudes to see an allday Christian Rock Festival with no sleep, no money and no beer! HILARIOUS! And Mister Peoples...it is always great to see you too man... all dressed up like OZZY! I never would have guessed!! It was great to see all of ya'll and I miss ya. Those were some fun times we all shared. Get in touch with me!!!

HALLOWEEN AT THE LOOP

Man, what an awesome show at the Loop for Halloween! Thank you so much to all of you cool people who came out and thanks to COWBOY MESSIAH and MANIFOLD STUD who drove to Canton to put on fantastic performances for everyone...you guys both kick so much ass it is damned hard to play after ya'll. Thanks to Lori Ann, Ashley and Ray for decorating the place up so damned cool and stuff, it was "spooky" in there If you couldn't make it out the show... I 'll try to give you the lowdown... I'm cookin' toasted cheese sandwiches right now nad tryin' my best not to get butter on the keyboard...so forgive the spellin.
Our new friends, MANIFOLD STUD from Youngstown started off the evening with a GREAT set of songs from their album, Phantasy Radio and did an especially fun version of SWEET HOME ALABAMA. The boys rawked damned hard and I can't wiat to play with them again in Youngstown. I highly recommend purchasing their cd...it is seriously worth it! Catchy songs and great writing, plus they are BIG Replacements fans too!
By now if you've been coming out to our LOOP shows you have probably seen COWBOY MESSIAH. These guys were on fire this time though, with this being an early cd release show in Ohio for their new album, American Zen. The fog machine and the strobelight were on full blast throughout their set and Tommy's face was a mess of poisonous make-up and sweat as he banged on the drums. They had all the drunks up and dancing. It must have been because of J's badass tattoos and Andy's SWEET skeleton outfit! I think they sold some cd's too!
We were drunk by the time we played and I just had a feeling that things were gonna get real damned crazy and I was right. I mean , shit I was playing with Gene Simmons on the drums and the dude from A Clockwork Orange on the bass and I myself was a pretty hot woman if I do say so myself! We played hard, drunk and fast...there is no better way. I drank so many shots I almost puked while we were playing, "Noah Judd"...it was a good night. I'm not even gonna be able to begin to tell ya what was goin' on in the audience! Let me just say..it was out of control!!! Whatta stellar night!!

Rawk Worth Your Money!

I have been getting out to some killer shows lately that I’d like to tell ya’ll about. I went to see The Drive-By Truckers with The Drams opening at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus a few weeks ago and it was amazing! The DRAMS were obviously pumped up and they played an awesome show. The highlights for me were when they played SLOBBERBONE’S “I Can Tell Your Love Is Waning” and Brent Best introduced it as an old folk song! That is my favorite SLOBBERBONE song and all the times I saw them play, they never played it, so I was ecstatic when Brent decided to visit his old days with the ‘BONE. My other favorite was the song that the DRAMS have been ending their sets with the last few times I’ve seen ’em, “I am The Cosmos”, which is actually a song by the late Chris Bell of BIG STAR, as I was informed by Brent while talking with him after the show. That has to be one of coolest and best songs ever written and The DRAMS do an incredible version that just rocks me to the core! The entire set was blazing and it was real cool to talk to Brent, Keith and Chad afterwards.
The TRUCKERS were up next and WOW!! What a show!! If you haven’t seen these guys live, then there is something wrong with you. They deliver on so many levels what can only be described as the ULTIMATE rock show! It was shocking for me because I hadn’t seen them play for a few years, the last time being at The Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland on the DECORATION DAY tour with the BOTTLE ROCKETS! These guys are bonafide rockstars now! They have come an amazing long way from when I first saw them at The Beachland Tavern on the beginning of the SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA tour years ago! There were only about 10 people in the bar that night… a long way from 2500 people at The Newport!!! They played a ton of songs and ended the evening with an ass-kicking version of VAN HALEN’s “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” that was just ballistic!
Another great show I just went to was at the High Five in Columbus and featured GLOSSARY, TWO COW GARAGE and SWIG TOOTH. This sparsely attended Sunday night show was INCREDIBLE!!! People are really missing out by not going out and supporting these bands!! GLOSSARY, from Tennessee is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. They were amazing with steel guitar and male/female dueling vocals and a drummer wearing a MINUTEMEN shirt that played like he was in that band!! They were great! I especially dug the songs POOR BOY and FOR WHAT I DON’T BECOME.
Next up was Columbus’ own, the mighty TWO COW GARAGE. These boys can deliver a rawk show too!! I have watched these guys play quite a few times and was really digging the new songs that will be coming out in February. They were incredible when they started really getting crazy, especially during “Burn In Hell” which I requested and they graciously played. Plus there bass player, Shane is a riot!! He is rock-n-roll!
Closing out the night was Brooklyn’s SWIGTOOTH. A power trio, these guys rocked damn hard and the singer/guitar player sorta reminded me of Kurt Cobain. The songs were topnotch and they played a GREAT cover of one of my favorite band’s DINOSAUR JR’s “Freak Scene”. SWIGTOOTH was the only band I had never heard before and they definitely one me over with their great songs and ferociously energetic performance.
If you get a chance I highly recommend looking these bands up. They are all on MYSPACE and need your support. Trust me… they RAWK WAY HARD and will be worth your time… better yet go see ’em live when you get the chance!!!!!

The Mini Tour and More Part 1

Whew!! Well it has been a week since we headed out and it has taken me all of this time to recover from it! On Aug 2nd we left Canton at around 1 AM on a marathon all-night drive to Chicago to play live on air at WLUW 88.7 in Chicago on THE RAZOR AND DI SHOW. We were extremely excited and decided to break up the driving into 3 shifts. This was also to be the maiden voyage of the new BIG MAROON VAN! Todd took the first shift and drove for about 2 hours. I was supposed to drive 2nd and climbed in the back to get some sleep. Todd and Brad were obviously very excited because they yapped for 2 hours straight while I tried desperatey to get some shuteye. When Todd pulled over for me to drive (somewhere on the Ohio Turnpike) I was still wide awake. We took off again and those 2 buttholes seemed to quickly fall asleep. I drove for almost 3 1/2 hours and finally decided to pull over and let Brad drive when I started to hallucinate. I thought I was seeing sunbursts of color and weird shark-like creatures. I fell asleep as Brad took off and about 1 hour later was awakened to the van shaking and jerking and Brad cussing. It was now daylight and we were on the outskirts of Chicago. There was a horrible thunderstorm and crazy traffic! We got off on some weird exit and found ourselves right smack downtown and after some trepidation finally found LOYOLA UNIVERSITY. We pulled into a parking garage and hung out since we were about 2 hours early. We didn't really know what to expect because we had never been on the radio before and we went inside to get set up and meet our kind hosts, RAZOR and DI. They showed up and seemed to be in a very bad mood, we were nervous and the very cool, RAZOR set us up in a small room to play acoustically. We messed around trying to figure out what songs to do and finally decided on BOB STINSON, THE ANTIDOTE and SOMETHING FOR THE PAIN. We are not really very practiced at playing acoustic and were pretty weirded out with having no sleep and very little food. After a few minutes they came and got us and we were taken into the control booth and were interviewed by the super friendly DI. We weren't very prepared and she had to keep telling us to get closer to the microphone. It was pretty funny. Then it was back into the other room and we played our songs. We did pretty well, I thought. Most of all we were thrilled to be on the radio and we had made some cool new friends in RAZOR and DI.

Messiahs, LSB and Hoss

Detroit has always been one of our absolute favorite places to play. We headed there this past weekend to play with our good friends COWBOY MESSIAH. The Cowboys are one of our favorite bands to play with and Saturday was INCREDIBLE! The boys also had Detroit's HOSS BURLEY to play the show as well as the legendary LIGHTSHOW BOB to do lights. We got to THE NEW DODGE LOUNGE in Hamtramck and loaded in and met the very enigmatic LIGHTSHOW BOB as he was loading in too. What a character this guy was! He was loading in piles of electrical cords and lights and stuff, was sweating like hell and reminded me of one of the guys my Dad used to hire for construction who was always getting stoned while doing the roofing jobs. Bob was really funny and cool and he held the door open for us as we loaded Todd's mess of drums in. I also have to mention the truly crazy street person who was standing there the entire time we were loading in screaming, "The dogs will eat YOU!!!" Completely nuts! We hung out in the bar and drank beer as we waited for the other bands to arrive. Soon we saw the familiar mug of Cowboy J. Bass player extrordinaire and mad drummer, Tommy! It was great to see the boys! We bullshitted awhile and met the very cool guys from Hoss Burley, who were showing up then too. Soon enough HOSS BURLEY hit the stage and WOW!!! These guys are awesome! reminding me of THE FALL, GOD BULLIES, JANES ADDICTION, THE JESUS LIZARD and THE DEAD KENNEDYS. Absolutely original music with an amazing frontman who stalked the stage and bellowed conspiracy theories and war rhetoric like a complete madman! HOSS BURLEY is fabulous! I can't wait to see'em again. One of the coolest things about this show for the night was PAT THE PAINTER (our buddy, Pat Buckohr from Canton). Pat had set up a a 7foot tall by 8ft? wide trifold board on stage and was painting all night long as the bands played. It was really cool. Pat painted an old coalminer that was just fucking amazing. Also while the bands were playing, LIGHTSHOW BOB was onstage too. I will never be able to describe in words what Bob's Lightshow is all about. This needs to be witnessed to be believed. Bob has a "light guitar" he plays onstage with the bands. This homemade contraption controls all of the lights. It is truly wonderful. We were up after HOSS and we played what I thought was a pretty darn ferocious show. We had LSB come center stage with his light guitar during our new song, THE GUNS OF AUGUSTA. He and I banged heads and rawked out hard together. It was a blast. It was also great to see some of our good Detroit friends come out for the show, like Rosik and Andrew and Marco and his girl. It's always awesome to see those guys and drink with'em. After we stumbled off the stage COWBOY MESSIAH stumbled on and delivered a fabulous set highlighted by their gorgeous anthemic "SUMMER GIRLS", a hit waiting to happen. The Cowboys are a true bar band and one of the most charismatic bands I know. I love watching them play. Their music practically forced Brad and I to partake of many shots with Andrew and also to drink beer out of the pitcher! We don't normally act like such heathen vikings! It was sad for the evening to come to an end after that but we will all do it together again soon. We headed home on a marathon drive all night for Todd to get back in time for work the next day. We made it. And then I drove home and slept all day. Man, I love rock-n-roll!

Chicago is Beautiful

We headed out to Chicago for the first time on July 8th. It was a long drive and we spent it laughing and listening to Led Zeppelin, Metallica and Son Volt plus a myriad of compilation tapes I have made for Brad over the years. The night before we had practiced really hard and got very drunk so we were primed for the windy city. Todd was wound up like a damned ball of wire and ready to explode! After making our way out of Ohio we entered Indiana and soon realized that there was really nothing there except campgrounds. Yogi Bear seemed to be very prominent and all the campgrounds looked real nice and clean. We decided that we will camp at one of them sometime. We got to Chicago way before the gig (we forgot about the time change) and loaded in to SILVIES LOUNGE ,a cool little venue in a nice and busy neighborhood. After loading all our gear into the bar, Todd decided to set some of his drums up as Brad and I chilled out on the very comfy couches. Todd was quickly informed by the owner that "WE were not the ONLY band playing!" and that we needed to make room for the other bands. I laughed as Todd was verbally drilled by the dude and Todd said, "I know ,SIR!" It was comical. So Brad and I waited for Todd to finish and then w decided to get some grub. WE LOVE GREASY SPOONS and boy we found a good one not frome the bar. It was called ABE LINCOLNS or something lke that. I got chicken and biscuits and a HUGE kickass piece of coconut cream pie.We all ate real good and Brad drank a 52oz beer as we ate. I guess he neede to get his liver primed. We headed back to SILVIES and finally met THE EMERALD LIZARDS as they were loading in. They seemed like real cool dudes and Chip was real likeable and funny. I sat at the bar and pounded Pabst as Brad and Todd talked to all the bands that were showingup to play. Finally the firts band played, MERLE THE MULE was a great crazy country band with elements of cow punk thrown in. I liked 'em alot, especially their GEORGE JONES cover. We were next and played a fairly decent albeit drunkenly sloppy set which seems to be our forte. We didn't get to finish because I broke 2 strings on the second to last song, TOOTHACHE. We ended up playing about 25 minutes but we played damned hard!Next up was THE EMERALD LIZARDS. They were GREAT! They played a hyperactive set of punkish blues and garage R&B. I loved'em. Highlights were a cover of THE SONICS' "STRYCHNINE" and a sweet song about vampires. The guitars were very impressive and the rhythm section was rock solid. The singer was Egyptian(which was damned cool) and a great and entertaining frontman and sorta reminded me of JELLO BIAFRA. Next up was WOW LASERBEAM from Kalamazoo, MI. They were real kickass as well with great songs about tank tops. They sounded like they could be from Detroit with a killer VON BONDIES style and vibe. I have to admit I missed some of their set because we were loading our equipment nto the van and drinking like fish by then. The last band ended up being THE REGRETS. Now I wish I would have been a little bit more sober 'cause I fuckin' LOVED this band! KILLER guitar leads by SEXY DAVE!!! And great songs with a singer that could easily be in OLD 97's. All in all it was a wonderful evening that was sparsely attended. The bands were all topnotch and We had a blast! THANKS to all the bands for makin' us feel right at home! Thanks to Chip from THE EMERALD LIZARDS for putting us up for the night and letting us join in the after party which was too insane for me to get into here. RAWK ON!!!!

RAWK ON!!!!
